Fric Shelf

Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano | 2021/22

The purpose of this project is to explore the role of friction as a structural connector and investigate how its physical properties can be leveraged in the design of a shelf system without fixed joinery. By analyzing the interplay between material surfaces, pressure, and force distribution, the project aims to develop a construction method that relies solely on friction to hold components together

With different study models I discovered various types of friction and how it can be used as a joinery. It was also interesting to integrate the interaction with gravity and how you can create a form of friction by shifting the weight. What is possible with friction and how do I take advantage of it’s qualities in order to design an object?

The complete structure is assembled by sliding the planks through the boxes. The compartments will stay in place because of the weight balance and friction but are still adjustable for desired heights along the planks.

This approach not only challenges conventional assembly techniques but also promotes flexibility, sustainability, and ease of disassembly. A friction-based system allows for a modular and adaptable structure, making it easy to assemble, modify, or transport. Furthermore, by reducing reliance on additional fasteners, the design minimizes material waste and enhances recyclability.
